I started watching Dr. Who just at the transition from William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton in 1966, although I've only watched it intermittently since the '80s. Technology has helped the special effects come a long way from the cheesy video effects that were possible in the early days.
I always thought the theme music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_theme_music) was one of the highlights and I like to think it still holds up. There have been pop reinterpretations over the years; I always liked the Orbital techno version
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H_o6ncUz3g) but the earlier one by The Timelords is fun, too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdTELokKfCk).

Hmm... somehow the links aren't working now. I'll try again.

If not they're easily searchable.

Good riddance to Tennant's exophthalmic pipsqueak sorry successor to Ecclestn's Doc. Which is why Catherine Tate was his best companion--because there was no need for mawkish sexual attraction simulation on the part of his companion. Donna Noble didn't feel "that way" about him. Whereas the stunning Freema Agyeman's mooning over Tennant, featuing zero sexual chemistry, was always seriously unbelieveable, and that wasn't Agreman's fault. Wheras chemistry between Eccleston--despite his non-romantic leading man looks--and the sturdily attractive Billie Piper was believable.
My choice for the new doc would have been Michelle Ryanm, but they blew that opportunity by using as his quasicompanion in Waters of Mars.
I persist in thinking it's high time for a female Doc, however. Someone with Ryan's ready-for-anything physical presence. Hey, how about Eliza Dushku? She's available, I assume, what with the cancellation of Dollhouse. Amy Acker (Angel's "Fred") might be even better. Or Scarlett Johansson. In which case people being turned onto her would at least be believable, eh?

@Ehkzu. Remember "the Rani"? Strong female villain on the old Dr. Who. They should bring her back.
"The Rani is a renegade Time Lord, an evil scientific genius whose villainy comes not from the usual variety of lust for power and suchlike, but from a mindset that treats everything (including morality) as secondary to her research; she has been known to enslave entire planets such as Miasimia Goria in order to have a ready supply of experimental subjects "
